2023 Farmers Insurance Open odds, picks, field: Surprising PGA predictions from model that’s nailed 8 majors

Jason Day has had tremendous success at the Farmers Insurance Open over the years. In fact, Day has won this event twice and he secured a T-3 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open last year. Day could certainly find himself in the mix again this week at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open, which gets underway from Torrey Pines Golf Course on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Day has won 12-times on the PGA Tour and he’s listed as a 27-1 longshot according to the latest 2023 Farmers Insurance Open odds. Jon Rahm is the 4-1 favorite, with Xander Schauffele (12-1), Collin Morikawa (12-1), Tony Finau (12-1) and Justin Thomas (13-1) next in line on the PGA odds board. Before locking in your the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up over $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model predicted Jon Rahm to finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. The model also included J.T. Poston in its best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet hit at +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $1,100. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scottie Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Jon Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open field is locked, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2023 Farmers Insurance Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open: Morikawa, a five-time PGA Tour champion and one of the favorites at 12-1, stumbles this week and barely cracks the top-10. Morikawa secured a runner-up finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions despite shooting a 72 in the final round.

However, Morikawa has been extremely inconsistent with his putter this season. In fact, Morikawa enters this week’s event ranked 114th in strokes gained: putting (-.056), 133rd in one-putt percentage (38.19%) and 168th in overall putting average (1.642). He also ranks 214th on the PGA Tour in approaches from 75-100 yards. He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Farmers Insurance Open 2023 field.

Another surprise: Max Homa, a 22-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. Homa has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

Homa certainly has the game to finish near the top of the leaderboard this week. The 32-year-old has won five times on the PGA Tour, and he’s coming off a T-3 finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions earlier this month. Homa is currently ranked sixth in birdie average (5.31), 21st in strokes gained: tee-to-green (1.236) and 28th in greens in regulation percentage (73.61%). If he’s striking the ball well this week, he’ll have a great shot at finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open. See who else to pick here.

How to make 2023 Farmers Insurance Open picks
The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer who will make surprising runs, including a massive 85-1 longshot. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s PGA picks here.

NBA Power Rankings: Celtics reclaim top spot over Nuggets; 76ers, Kings enter top five; Hawks taking flight

One of the low-key hilarious lines of the classic 1971 version of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory is delivered by Charlie’s schoolteacher, played by a perfectly deadpan David Battley:

“I’ve just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we’ve learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn’t matter in the slightest.”

This otherwise random blast from the past is relevant because, in case you haven’t noticed, we’ve moved our NBA Power Rankings from Friday to Monday! And if you’re reading this on Tuesday, it doesn’t matter in the slightest.

Anyway, I’m sure not all of you showed up for quotes from Mr. Turkentine, so let’s get on with the rankings for this week (well, actually 10 days), which saw a new No.1 that is also an old No. 1. The Boston Celtics reclaimed the top spot with which they’ve become familiar over the past couple of seasons, putting up a perfect week while last edition’s top dog, the Denver Nuggets, fall ever so slightly due to a loss on Sunday night.

Both teams are getting pressure from underneath, as the swelling magma of the red-hot Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings are burning at the heels of the league’s top two teams. Making leaps this week are the soaring Atlanta Hawks, who jumped a whopping 13 spots, and the Oklahoma City Thunder, who enter the top 10 after being viewed as an almost certain tank candidate to begin the season. You just never know.

On the other side are the unfortunate Indiana Pacers, who couldn’t combat the absence of star point guard Tyrese Haliburton and have dropped six games in a row. Falling eight spots are the New York Knicks, whose defensive acumen evaded them over the past handful of games.

Here is this season’s first Monday edition of the NBA Power Rankings.

How Bengals DC Lou Anarumo confused Josh Allen and the Bills in convincing divisional round playoff win

How Bengals DC Lou Anarumo confused Josh Allen and the Bills in convincing divisional round playoff win

The Bengals certainly out-executed the Bills in their convincing 27-10 win in the divisional round, but the game plans on offense and especially on defense were masterclasses by Zac Taylor and Lou Anarumo.

Behind an offensive line down three starters, Burrow threw exactly half of his passes (19) in 2.5 seconds or less against the Bills. He completed 16 of those attempts (84.2%) for 108 yards. Buffalo’s pass rush, mitigated.

Now, two of his touchdowns came on attempts in which he held the ball longer, and the score to Hayden Hurst to extend the lead to 14-0 was brilliantly designed.

Watch as Hurst and Ja’Marr Chase sell the wide receiver screen, Burrow pump fakes it to get safety Jordan Poyer to bite, then Hurst continues upfield to a vacancy in the end zone.

In the snow, when traction was limited, there was simply no way Poyer was going to slam on the breaks in a split second, then explode in the opposite direction fast enough to get to the football. And of course, the screen to Chase had to be respected at the start of the play. Genius.

For as much as Cincinnati marched down the field with ease against a banged-up Buffalo defense, I want to focus on what Cincinnati did to a Bills offense that, while far from flawless since mid September, finished second in the NFL in scoring and yards per play during the regular season and was coming off a rather sloppy 34-point outing that featured 423 yards of total offense.

And it wasn’t a blitz-happy plan whatsoever.

The Bengals blitzed Josh Allen just seven times on 47 drop backs (14.8%). It was the creativity of the blitz and often the appearance of the blitz that confounded Buffalo’s ultra-talented quarterback and Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey all afternoon. It felt similar to what Cincinnati did in the second half of last season’s AFC Championship Game, when Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense were unrecognizable.

Check out this “blitz” in the fourth quarter. I put blitz in quotes because technically, it was a double corner blitz, but watch how both blitzing corners slowed as they reached the line of scrimmage. Their presence was to draw a tackle away from defensive linemen then serve as outside contain players to keep Allen from going off-structure, where he’s arguably the most dangerous quarterback in the NFL.

With the right guard helping inside, right tackle Spencer Brown had to respect the corner blitz, thereby leaving defensive end Cam Sample essentially unblocked to rush up the field. Instinctively, Allen bounced outside, and Hilton was waiting.

On the last play of the first quarter, already in a 14-0 hole, Allen was sacked by safety Vonn Bell on a play that technically was not a blitz. At the snap, Sample, at left defensive end, sunk into coverage. On the opposite side of the line, Bell blitzed, so only four Bengals rushers were sent after Allen.

Bell’s free run at the quarterback was directly in the throwing lane of Allen, who was looking to get it out of his hands quickly to Diggs. And because of Sample floating down one hash mark, Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt could drastically widen his drop to contest that throw if it was made.

Because of all that, Allen held the football and was eventually taken to the turf on that first down. That was 99% a play-design win from Anarumo.

And then late, as the Bills were making their last gasp at a comeback, Anarumo dialed up an amazing corner blitz Allen and his offensive line never saw coming. Why’s that? Hilton wasn’t creeping near the line, he was ridiculously far away from the football at the snap

As per usual on these zone blitzes, on the opposite side of the field, a defensive lineman dropped into coverage, muddying the initial picture for Allen. That caused enough hesitation to give Hilton the time needed to get all the way to the quarterback inside the pocket, nearly forcing a fumble and potentially saving a touchdown. Check out Stefon Diggs streaking down the middle of the field.

The play was ultimately ruled incomplete, but altogether was a success for Cincinnati’s defense.

I have to mention, this wasn’t solely a game-plan victory for Cincinnati. The Bengals players dominated in the trenches on both sides of the ball and the skill-position players for Burrow’s club were far better than Allen’s.

But every time the Bills started to show signs of life offensively, Anarumo went into his bag of tricks to perplex one of the most talented quarterbacks on the planet and his first-year offensive coordinator.

Those wrinkles were the cherry on top for Cincinnati in one of the most impressive playoff wins in team history. Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, but the Bengals have the quarterback, the offensive and defensive talent, and the game-plan mastery to win a Super Bowl.
